Motivation for the Project

"Myst the Book of Atrus" is, and will always be, my favorite book. I read it when I was twelve years old. Many of the themes in the story - e.g. science, mindfulness, parent-child relationships, feeling trapped - are ones that feel as important to me now as when I first read the book.

When I was twelve, I started drawing a page-by-page translation of the book into comic form. I drew it in a marble composition notebook with a #2 pencil. I got through about half of the book before I stopped. I can't find the notebook anymore, sadly, but I certainly remember my time working on it with fondness.

Since then, I've been working on other original stories for comics and animation. But I keep thinking about Myst! I can't get it out of my head. I've been working on a film script adaptation for the past several years. I've decided to take that film script and turn it into a comic book. Instead of the marble notebook, I'm going to use Photoshop. My goal is to focus on the story and produce page quickly, so the rendering will be fairly rough and loose. I think I'd learn a lot about drawing and storytelling by doing it, and it'd be a good excuse to think about Myst.

Myst fans, I hope you like it. It's not a straight up adaptation; it's changed in big and small ways that emphasize parts of the original story I personally connected with. For people who haven't heard of Myst, I hope you'll enjoy it to! You shouldn't need to know anything about Myst the game or the book to understand it.

I can't promise when it'll be updated, but I know I have no lack of motivation to work on it.

That's my story. I hope you enjoy it!

I just happened across your page today. Thank you so much for doing this. I too am consumed by Myst. I am currently reading the Myst Reader again. I have also created Wherigo (www.wherigo.com) cartridges based on the ages of Myst Island.

Again thanks for the wonderful work and I am looking forward to new pages.

I love the comic. I've read the books and played the games, and there's still something about Myst that pulls me back whenever I get involved into daily life. The Myst experience will always be a part of my escape into beautiful virtual worlds.
You did a great job on the pages and I'll be reading more of this comic.
Thank you for doing this!

This is really quite wonderful. Have you ever thought of licensing the content from Cyan Worlds and putting the idea up on Kickstarter? I think there'd be a market for it out there.
